In 1958 Pacific Grove artist, Milton Williams, opened "The Shop in the Garden" (AKA "The Garden Shop") in the location now occupied by Aslan's Garden. For forty years Milton entertained and delighted visitors and customers with his beautiful, original and often whimsical metal sculpture. He had a unique and creative vision which was reflected in the shop. Year after year people would return to the garden's welcoming and friendly atmosphere. After Milt's death in 1998 the garden went through a period of decline and eventually closed it's doors in 2005.

I came to work for Milt after graduating from college in 1967. Little did I know that this temporary job would become my life. I started out as an apprentice and it became an association and friendship that would continue for many years. During these years, in addition to producing pieces for Milt, I started a line of windchimes along with fountains, lighting fixtures and other sculptures, that were sold not only at the Shop in the Garden but nationally. When the opportunity to re-open the garden came along my wife, Lisa, and I jumped at the chance.

Our goal and mission is to recreate the spirit and feeling of old but with our own touch. We showcase our own work, with some pieces in the style of Milt Williams, as well as the work of other artists and craftsmen. It is a unique and interesting collection.

Our talented shop manager, Sarah Moody, has been an associate of this garden space for the past eight years. She is an outstanding artist, craftsman and gardener. Her talents show up throughout the garden and her work is prominently displayed. She is an integral part of our day to day operation.

My wife, Lisa, has a "day job" but without her guidance and support this garden would not have happened. She is also the "CFO" and head bookkeeper.

Currently, the rest of our regular crew consists of Leslie Dunn, and Gloria Souza. Their hard work and help keeps us moving forward and on target.

Many other people have had, and continue to have, smaller parts in the business. They have been sources of inspiration, ideas and help. We are grateful to all.

We hope you enjoy Aslan's Garden!!!

Aslan's Garden is named after our 17 year old golden retriever. Alsan and his brother, Murray, greeted visitors to the "Shop in the Garden" for many years before semi-retiring to hang out at my studio in Carmel Valley.

Sadly, Murray left us at the ripe old age of 14 but Aslan has hung in there in spite of arthritis and other maladies. He readily agreed to come out of retirement and resume his duties as greeter but only if the garden were named after him. Our indoor gallery space is appropriately named "Murray's Gallery". Please stop by and say hi to Aslan - or send him an e-mail.
